I was recently contacted by Kaitlyn, co owner of a local East Nashville architectural design business, nine 12 Design. They are now in their second year of doing business and needed new business headshots / lifestyle photos of them. I told her I had them covered.
This is Kaitlyn-
This is Martin, Kaitlyn’s husband and business partner-
It’s always fun to meet other local small business owners and learn from each other. A great deal of encouragement comes through networking! Kaitlyn and Martin of nine 12 Design specialize in residential design and historic preservation. They definitely value the history and charm of our city and want to preserve that through their work.
Here is the story of how Martin and Kaitlyn started in the field and came to be entrepreneurs of their East Nashville architectural design business. Story written by Kaitlyn :
– We both went to Notre Dame and were working in architecture right out of school. I moved to Nashville in 2012 and started working on residential projects and getting a lot of exposure to project management and business operations. I think we always knew we wanted to start our own business together but took a bit of a plunge last year when I was ready for a job change.
Our goal was to work with our neighbors in East Nashville and provide personable, custom design solutions for projects big and small. We’ve worked on carports, porches, large additions, renovations, and a few new custom homes. We love collaborating closely with clients and have a very in depth understanding of historic overlay design guidelines. We’ve been very lucky to both be able to do this full time and we hope it continues!
I encourage anyone reading this to keep my new friends at nine 12 Design in mind for their architectural design related projects. I certainly wish them success moving forward!
Why is a professional headshot important?
This is a legitimate question, and most professionals and aspiring actors / models understand the need for a professional headshot. With today’s advanced cell phone camera technology, they produce a fair product! It’s fine for a social media snap or snapshot of a casual outing. For updating a professional resume or marketing materials, company website and social media, you need a professional headshot. Why is a professional headshot important? Effort put into what you do.
-Why is a professional headshot important? Effort and accountability. A similar concept to going to a job interview or a date dressed appropriately. Having a sloppy appearance says “I don’t really care”. It’s as much about the effort as it is having a nicely lit and properly composed photograph that represents you. Not only as a professional, but a person as well. A professional headshot photographer knows how to light and compose for each unique subject and make it flattering. Here are a couple gentlemen who came for headshots for their updated company directory and website. This company is a property development management group, ironically right in my neighborhood!
If they did selfies and called it good enough, how would that look to clients paying top dollar for their services? In the grand scheme of things, headshots aren’t terribly expensive and they represent the individual well if done properly.
This aspiring actor also has to invest, with no guarantee of successful signing of an agency or bookings. But by getting headshots, it shows he’s willing to invest in himself and is serious. For the most part, people aren’t willing to invest in others who don’t invest in themselves. Kindof a catch 22. I know I’d be hesitant to hire a professional of any kind who did a cell phone snapshot as part of their branding. I’d rather see no photo than that. Maybe because I’m a photographer and am sensitive to that, but my first thought is wondering what corners they’d cut while doing work for me.
Though I fancy myself as a documentary photographer, I do enjoy doing lifestyle photography and headshots for different walks of life. It brings out their character for the intended purpose. Also I find it rewarding to meet different people in different careers and lifestyles, and give them the tools to help them in their careers. Often their need for a headshot comes last minute. They have an audition tomorrow or later this week. They are applying for a new job or new position and just found out they need a headshot, like now. Or for the freelance marketing person who wants a casual but professional looking portrait of themselves for social media and their website. It feels good to be able to help them, we understand life happens.
Mary, Midwife’s assistant- headshots for different walks of life
A couple different moods to show she can look professional, but still casual enough for women giving birth to feel comfortable with. It’s a great position of trust and comfort. Mary has to look caring, approachable, and nurturing as well as professional. Her job requires having a very personal connection with her clients, so it will be a different feel from the standard business headshot.
It’s all about that camera presence and the ability to shine on camera. Slightly more dramatic lighting was a nice feature for him and what he needed.
Sure, beauty never hurts! In her position, people are trusting her with their finances and personal / financial security. Having a trustworthy, friendly, approachable, and professional image is important here. Confidence without arrogance.
Cameron-freelance business and marketing consultant –
This brings out soul and character. Meet me at the coffee shop and let’s talk. Good for website bio and social media. This can help attract clients who want a freelancer instead of a more corporate figure. These are some recent characters who visited my studio for headshots. Will you be next?
This all happened so quickly, I was out and about on a Saturday afternoon, I met with a couple about doing their wedding photography and went to the store. Came back home and the phone rang, a lady was saying her son who lives here part time, and part time in New York needed actor headshots for an audition for an agency and for a role in Shakespeare in the park. They were looking for a qualified photographer who did actor headshots in Nashville, and needed them on a fairly emergency basis, which was fine, because my workload wouldn’t begin until the following week. I always like that moment of surprise when they think they’re asking the impossible and I tell them, well come on in at xx time and we’ll get you taken care of! So, it began.
Some key points about actor headshots in Nashville or anywhere else-
Actor headshots in Nashville don’t have the same demand as LA obviously, but they are filming in Tennessee more and more, so I do see them occasionally. Business headshots show a confident yet friendly presence, more that of the every day person, it has to look inviting but professional. Actor headshots or headshots for other talent like music or theater performer, comedian, etc. need a slightly more commanding and compelling presence to draw in the viewer, which sometimes is a talent agency or casting director. There has to be a strong eye contact and feature that stands out to them in order to impress them. This young actor is from New York and I could tell I was working with a seasoned guy, and was no stranger to the camera.
I know black and white isn’t used in the talent world, but he got the best ones from the shoot in color….I just did this because something spoke to me as this being a nice black and white portrait, and gave it to him as a fun extra, just because.
Meet Tom. He’s a single professional California native living in Nashville, I met him through business related networking. We talked in recent weeks about doing a personalized photoshoot for him. He was getting a new suit and shoes, and just wanted some photos for social media and professional / personal use. Instead of more traditional business headshots or portraits, to make it personalized we went with lifestyle photos, to capture life, soul, and energy in it’s natural context. Destination-downtown Nashville. End result-Downtown lifestyle photos!
It was fun to hit the streets and alleyways of downtown Nashville to get some powerful lifestyle photos of Tom. He even said this would be a self confidence boost and personal uplift. How he sees himself in photos with the spiffy dress clothes he treated himself to will definitely change the man in the mirror! Next we would hit a couple pubs and rooftops to capture him feeling the energy of the city. As he mingles with some pub patrons and grabs himself a martini to sip on.
I really enjoyed the contrast and transformation in this shoot. The mood and feel changes, from mobster lookalike, powerful businessman, man of the town, and ending up with a confident business / career man. I truly enjoyed the photoshoot and getting to know Tom. I’m glad I helped give him the tools to help him with his business and personal needs and the help these photos would provide!
